South Africa Plans Ban on Mobile Phone Use by Children and Pregnant Mums

South Africa's government is considering imposing a ban on mobile phone use by pregnant women and children under the age of 16 under proposals from the Department of Health. The proposal would impose a ban until the scientific community can prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" that mobile phones do not have negative impact on people's health.

Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi told TechCentral that he has consulted closely with communications minister Roy Padayachie and the telecommunications regulator, the Independent Communications Authority of SA, about the department's plan. He says the proposed ban enjoys widespread support in government.

The Department plans to hold a public consultation on the matter not to decide if the legislation is warranted, but how to implement it.

The proposed legislation is expected to be debated by Parliament in the second half of this year.
