UAE: Du plans commercial femtocell rollouts by 3Q

The initiative is to benefit Du’s customers with improved indoor coverage

Du, UAE's second telecom operator, plans for a commercial rollout of femtocell services by the third quarter of 2011.

Hatem Bamatraf, senior vice president - network development technology, Du, told CommsMEA: "With already on femtocell trials, we expect the commerical femtocell rollouts to happen by the third quarter of 2011."
Earlier, the operator announced its partnership with Alcatel-Lucent to install the vendor's femtocell solutions to improve its indoor mobile coverage for its customers. Bamatraf says: "With Alcatel-Lucent as our sole supplier of femtocell solutions, we are now in the stage of project implementation involving equipment delivery, installation, commissioning, integration and end-to-end servicing."
"Femtocell is a new technology trend that is gaining traction globally. Femtocells extend the services of service providers' offerings to customers into their homes, and our bundle offerings will be different for businesses and consumers addressing their specific demands," he adds.
With fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture on the fixed side and an HSDPA+ network on the mobile side, Du recently converged its IP transport networks to meet the demand for high-end broadband services for mobile applications and data packages.
