Guyana's president says a Chinese company will build a $35 million wireless system that is expected to speed government services and provide Internet connections in rural regions.
Bharrat Jagdeo says Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co. will start hooking up hospitals, police stations, military outposts and other facilities early next year.
He made the announcement late Monday.
The project is part of a larger government plan to improve Internet access in the South American country.
The Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Co. already recently launched a high-speed Internet service after a $60 million fiber-optic cable network that runs from Suriname to Guyana was installed in January.
