Singapore Telecommunications ( SingTel) has signed a collaboration agreement with Portugal Telecom to share Internet television and fiber-optic know-how.
Like SingTel, Portugal Telecom is the largest telco on its home turf.
Under the pact, the two companies will collaborate in the areas of fixed-line fiber-optic networks and IPTV (Internet protocol TV), the Business Times reported on Tuesday.
In addition, the two operators are joining forces for procurement to save costs from greater economies of scale, and they will also offer secondment programs for staff, SingTel said in a statement.
Portugal Telecom has gained about 30 percent market share in pay-TV in the past three years in Portugal, servicing more than 800,000 pay-TV customers, SingTel said.
"This is an exciting time in telecommunications globally as telcos capitalize on the opportunities arising from the merger of telecoms and media." Allen Lew, CEO Singapore, SingTel, was quoted by the Channel NewsAsia as saying.
Lew added that collaboration with Portugal Telecom "will bring benefits to our customers by allowing us to gain more experience in fiber, benchmark our costs and improve our processes so that we can be more effective in meeting our customers' needs."
