France: SFR and Bouygues Telecom team up for FTTH

French operators SFR and Bouygues Telecom are to embark on a co-funded project to fibre to the home (FTTH) networks in areas of high population density.
In reality this will encompass the twenty most populated French cities. Even though neither firm disclosed precisely what level of investment they would make, what is known is that the two telcos will share costs to expand FTTH network towards buildings’ thresholds.
However, both operators will reserve the right for separate commercial offer, enabling, says a joint press release, “each company [to] remain free to select the services that will be offered to consumers.”
SFR has already started the commercial deployment of FTTH services and expects to keep pace with such rollouts in 2011. For its part, Bouygues Telecom expects to begin offering FTTH services in the first half of 2011.
At present, 100,000 households are connected to the partners’ fibre broadband networks out of 947,000 homes passed.
