Huawei inks MOU with Bell for Canadian joint innovation centre

Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications network provider that has an Ottawa research and development office, signed a memorandum of understanding with Bell to create and maintain a joint innovation centre in Canada.
The two firms, which worked together on the framework for Bell's new high-speed access network, will investigate broadband wireless and network products in the centre, whose location has not been announced.
“Through this new Innovation Centre agreement with Bell, we will offer an enhanced suite of business and technology benefits to our growing Canadian customer base,” stated Charles Ding, president of Huawei North America.
“Strengthening our support of Bell’s mobile innovation and investment strategy helps us at Huawei to achieve greater heights in sales, knowledge transfer and product development.”
In April 2010, Shenzen, China-based Huawei pledged a $50-million investment in and 250-person staff addition to Ottawa. At the time, the year-old facility had about 70 staff.
The labs in Ottawa are examining advanced application-specific integrated circuit chips to speed up processing, as well as ways to reduce interchange between systems and speed networks up.
Huawei joined OCRI's executive in August and in November, added former Nortel chief technology officer John Roese to its staff.
