Huawei aims to become a household name in Australia

Few people outside the telecoms industry have heard of Huawei, and fewer still can pronounce it. That is about to change with the company now selling consumer products in Australia under its own brand and about to start promoting itself.
The company is planning a formal launch of its brand in Australia on Monday 6 December. Its main consumer products to date in Australia have been USB dongles and portable WiFi hotspots for wireless broadband, and its most high-profile product would be the Telstra T-Touch Tab Android based tablet. None of these have been Huawei branded
However the company has quietly been introducing some Huawei branded cellphones onto the market. In particular the U8150 Ideos Android-based smartphone, launched in September and billed as the world's first affordable smartphone.
The Ideos is now on sale in VHA subsidiary Crazy John's and Dick Smiths. The Ideos runs Android 2.2 'Froyo' and supports HSDPA at 7.2Mbps. Its inbuilt WiFi router enables up to eight devices to share that connection. It is available in black, yellow, blue and purple but only the black version is offered by Crazy John's and Dick Smiths.
Dick Smith stores are selling the Ideos unlocked for $199, or prepaid locked to Virgin Mobile for $159 and the U8230 Android unlocked for $299. Virgin Mobile is also selling the Huawei G6600 prepaid for $59.
If you really want an Ideos with a different colour you can buy a blue one from online retailer Mobicity. However it will cost you: $299. And that price, according to Mobicity is a reduction from the regular price of $449! When Huawei launched the U8150 it promised that the price, worldwide would be less than $US200.
