The UAE has no plan to offer a third mobile-phone licence, Mohammed Al Ghanim, director general of the country's telecom regulator, told state-run Dubai TV.
Emirates Telecommunications Corp, known as Etisalat, and Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Co, known as du, currently offer mobile phone services in the UAE.
In March, UK-based telecoms consultancy Ovum said the prospects of a third mobile licence for the UAE in the near future currently looked unlikely.
“In the UAE, you have two essentially government-owned operators, so it’s not necessarily in their interests to enter a third player,” Ovum emerging markets analyst Daniel Subramanian told Arabian Business.
