Lithuania invites Chinese telecom giant Huawei to set up an R&D centre

Lithuanian President Dalia GrybauskaitÄ— invited the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to expand its activities in Lithuania. During her meeting with Huawei's top executives in Shanghai, the President invited the company, which is among the leading players in the global telecom market, to establish a center of innovation technologies in Lithuania for developing concrete technological projects.
"Huawei investments in Lithuania will have the same guarantees like in any other EU member state. In our country, we have many educated telecommunications professionals, the best developed fiber optic network in Europe and one of the highest internet speeds in the world. All conditions are in place for telecom companies not only to implement but also to design modern solutions in Lithuania," the President said.
In was officially agreed with the Huawei management that the company would organize and finance a two-week professional training course in information technologies for ten Lithuanian students. Huawei is among top five most innovative companies in the world and ranks in the top two in global patent filings.
In September, IBM announced that it would open a research center in Lithuania. From the beginning of last year, Lithuania has also succeeded in attracting Microsoft Corp., the world’s biggest software maker, and Barclays Plc, the U.K.’s third-biggest bank, to set up units in Lithuania.
