The second largest telecommunications equipment provider in the world, Nokia Siemens said it is setting up its fifth global network operations center (GNOC) in Sau Paulo, Brazil. The Espoo, Finland-based company said this was serve a growing base of Latin American operators seeking to outsource network operations.
"Since we opened our first GNOC in 2007, we have achieved significant scale and experience in successfully managing our customers' complete networks remotely for better efficiency," Ashish Chowdhary, head of Global Services at Nokia Siemens Networks, said in a statement. "Latin America and Brazil in particular are growth markets for us. We have established strong partnerships with customers in the continent, becoming the number one managed services provider, managing networks for more than 70 million subscribers in the region."
Nokia Siemens has established the GNOC with an investment of €15 million ($20 million) and 300 expert technicians on hand to deal with 20 million subscribers. Its set to officially open in January of 2011.
Nokia Siemens currently has two global operations centers in India and one in Portugal. It has another one being established in Russia. The company says in addition to Latin American operators, the Brazilian operation will serve customers around the world.
"The way we set up these centers means that they are all interconnected so resources can be optimized and allocated intelligently," Arto Vilkman, head of services at Nokia Siemens Networks Latin America, said in a statement.

The selected candidate must be able to demonstrate his abilities on PS data TCP Throughput optimization by optimizing MTU and MSS in PS Core side and looking at TCP Protocol Overheads.

Ericsson to deploy 4G in Israel's Partner Communications networks

Israeli telecoms company Partner Communications Company Ltd today announced that it has signed an agreement with LM Ericsson Israel Ltd (Ericsson) for the upgrade of its existing networks and the deployment of a fourth generation network in Israel.
The agreement covers the upgrade, replacement and expansion of parts of Partner̢۪s existing cellular and fixed line network and the maintenance of those networks. It also includes enhancing Partner̢۪s capabilities with respect to the ISP services it provides over those networks.

Commercial operation of the fourth generation network will be subject to the allocation of the relevant spectrum by the Israeli Ministry of Communications.

The cost of the fixed assets that will be replaced is USD40m, excluding accumulated depreciation. The agreement with Ericsson, which runs until the end of December 2014, will cost Partner around USD100m per quarter for the capital expenditure and maintenance services.

Sony Ericsson Captures Japan Smartphone Share, Trims Apple Lead

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB’s Xperia captured 21 percent of Japan’s smartphone market in the six months ended September, cutting the share of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, MM Research Institute Ltd. said.
Devices running on Apple’s software accounted for 60 percent of all smartphone shipments in the nation during the period, down from 61 percent a year earlier, Tadayuki Shinozaki, an analyst at the Tokyo-based research, said by telephone today. Xperia, which runs Google Inc.’s Android software, went on sale in Japan on April 1.
Sharp Corp., which introduced its first Android model in June, had 6.3 percent of the shipments, the researcher said in a report today. Toshiba Corp. and handsets made by Taiwan’s HTC Corp., which run on Android and Microsoft Corp.’s Windows software, had the same share of 4.5 percent, it said.
Softbank Corp., Japan’s third-largest mobile-phone operator, is the exclusive provider of the iPhone in Japan. Xperia operates only on the network of NTT DoCoMo Inc., the country’s largest wireless carrier.

Ericsson Gains From Mobile Broadband Growth In U.S.

Profits at the wireless-network maker beat expectations as operators like AT&T invest in its wireless networks.
Shares of Ericsson shot up Friday after the Swedish wireless-network provider reported profits and sales that beat expectations, echoing similarly-positive number from fellow European tech giant Nokia on Thursday.
Net profit came in at 3.6 billion Swedish kronor ($542 million), higher than analysts' consensus and up fourfold from the 810 million kronor it made last year. Its shares were up 5.9% in European afternoon trading on Friday.
The company saw its biggest sales jump--by 223%--in the United States, where operators like AT&T spent more money on Ericsson's technology to provide data access at higher speeds for people with mobile devices like smartphones and netbooks.
The company said that mobile broadband continued to grow in the quarter, especially in North America and Japan, while voice-related sales were slow. It added that demand for 2G capacity expansion in China had returned during the quarter and that India had "gradually improved" with 2G deliveries. "Western Europe is still slow," it added.
The industry-wide component shortage that has hit high-tech device makers such as Nokia also hit Ericsson's sales. "Our sales in the quarter continued to be impacted by the ongoing portfolio transition," the company said. "We also experienced mix variations and more intense competition in China."

Jajah launches Facebook voice call app for Blackberry






























IP telephony outfit Jajah, which was bought by Spain’s Telefonica earlier this year, has released what it claims is “the first true calling solution for Facebook”. The service, dubbed Social Call, which launched Tuesday as a beta trial for Blackberry devices, lets users establish single click calls to any Facebook friend who is online, the firm said.
The user selects the friend they wish to call, causing the application to send a message to the friend over the Facebook Chat channel. When the friend clicks on that message, the call is established. Jajah, which is based in Mountain View, California, said the service will incur no extra charges.
“Facebook calling has been the holy grail for telecommunications companies all over the world who are trying to come to terms with the rise of social networking,” Healy said. “We have seen numerous announcements from many companies, but Jahah is the first to bring a genuine calling service to Facebook,” The firm’s CEO, Trevor Healy, said.
Last week Jajah announced that it had been selcted to power IP voice calling on Yahoo’s newly released Messenger iPhone App. The app allows iPhone users to make free VoIP calls on Yahoo Messenger as well as low cost calls to external networks.
