ZTE eyes 80% sales from overseas

The overseas market may eventually contribute as much as 80 percent of ZTE Corp's total sales, said Hou Weigui, the president of China's second-largest telecom-equipment maker by sales.
At a news briefing in Beijing on Friday, Hou said ZTE's overseas presence has expanded in recent years.
The Shenzhen-based company took its first step toward globalization in 1995, when it established branches in Indonesia.
Overseas sales amounted to 20.8 billion yuan ($3.27 billion) in the first half of this year, accounting for 55.7 percent of its total sales.
Hou said the figure will continue to grow and may reach as much as 80 percent, but he did not predict when ZTE will realize that goal.
"We are particularly interested in big countries, where market demand is large," said Hou.
However, political concerns from foreign governments and currency volatility have already hurt ZTE's global expansion.
Like its larger rival Huawei Technologies Co, ZTE has also faced difficulty in selling telecom equipment in the North American and Indian markets. Hou also claimed that the US government has hindered ZTE's sales because of concerns about national security.
"It's useless making further efforts (to persuade the US government to trust the company). The problem cannot be solved," Hou said.
He added that ZTE will only perform well in less sensitive areas, including the fields of mobile phones and enterprise IT solutions.
Another challenge facing the company is that of currency volatility, which has eaten away at profits. The company reported net profit of 1.07 billion yuan in the third quarter, a year-on-year decline of 21.5 percent. However, the comparative weakness of the euro against the stronger yuan meant that earnings from European sales were lower than expected.
"We cannot ignore the currency issues any more. Measures should be adopted to help avoid this risk," Hou said, without elaborating.
Founded in 1985, ZTE has grown into a leading global vendor of telecom infrastructure equipment, along with Ericsson AB, Nokia Siemens Networks BV and Alcatel-Lucent SA.
"ZTE's success is attributed to hard work, creativity and government support," said C.W. Cheung, Asia-Pacific consulting director at the researcher Ovum.
"ZTE's competitiveness in low price and high quality helped it stand out amid the global financial instability of the last three years," Cheung said.
However, given the weaker investment in telecom-network construction from global carriers, makers of telecom equipment worldwide have started to tap new fields to boost growth.
Hou said ZTE has seen a fast growth rate in terms of its mobile-phone business. The company expects to ship 12 million smart terminals in 2011, with total terminal shipments reaching 120 million units, up from 90 million in 2010.
He Shiyou, executive vice-president of ZTE, also said that the company wants to become one of the world's top three mobile-phone vendors by 2015.
Hou said ZTE would like to rely on flagship products to increase its sales of mobile phones. The ZTE Blade V880, an Android-based smartphone, has sold more than 5 million units worldwide. The company said the number of ZTE Blades sold in China has so far surpassed Apple Inc's iPhone series.

HSBC financing for Nokia Siemens Networks contract with AsiaCell Iraq

HSBC has signed a $24m medium term facility to finance telecommunications equipment and systems supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks - one of the world's leading telecommunications equipment suppliers - to Asiacell, a mobile operator in Iraq. The equipment and services supported by this financing will allow Asiacell to continue to upgrade the quality of services it provides to customers across Iraq as well as to accommodate ongoing growth in subscriber numbers to the Asiacell network.
Nokia Siemens Networks entered into a framework contract with Asiacell in 2008 and has since been one of the leading suppliers of telecommunications equipment and systems to Asiacell.
Nokia Siemens Networks solutions, financed through the credit facility, will be used to expand and upgrade Asiacell's network in several different areas of Iraq.
"Once more, we have been able to support the growth of our customer in advancing our common goal of providing best-in-class services to the people in Iraq, both through the provision of our technology and facilitating a financial solution," said Christian Boczek, Country Director of Nokia Siemens Networks in Iraq.
This medium term financing is insured by the German Government's Export Credit Agency (ECA) Euler Hermes Kreditversicherungs AG. Euler Hermes ' primary role is to enhance German companies' competitiveness abroad.
Mr. Faruk Mustafa Rasool, Chairman of Asiacell, said: "Achieving financial close on this ECA facility is another significant milestone in Asiacell's history. The support we have obtained here from Euler Hermes Kreditversicherungs AG, Nokia Siemens Networks and HSBC is important to Asiacell as an established market leading operator with a strong track record and an ambitious growth strategy."
Dr. Christiane Schloderer, Structured Finance of Nokia Siemens Networks Middle East, said: "We are proud to have been one of the leading suppliers to Asiacell since 2008. The ECA supported financing demonstrates our ability to provide innovative financing solutions to our customers throughout the region. This ECA backed facility is the first of its kind in Iraq in many years now. We are pleased to have worked with Asiacell and HSBC in implementing this financing and also grateful for the support provided by Euler Hermes Kreditversicherungs AG."
Simon Lee, Director in HSBC's project and export finance team, said: "HSBC and our local subsidiary in Iraq, Dar Es Salaam Investment Bank, are delighted to have supported Asiacell and Nokia Siemens Networks in this landmark financing, being Asiacell's first ever ECA supported financing and also the first ECA financing into Iraq since the 1980's. Iraq has a substantial infrastructure development requirement and ECA financing will be a very important part of the associated financing needs. This Euler Hermes -supported financing emphasises yet again the continued importance and attraction of medium and long term ECA supported finance to Middle Eastern borrowers for the financing of capital expenditure. It is also a further demonstration of HSBC's market leading position in the business, having arranged more ECA backed loans than any bank in the Middle East in 2010 and in the first half of 2011, according to data provider Dealogic."

ZTE Nine-Month Operating Revenue Rises 26.5% to RMB58.29 Billion

ZTE Corporation ("ZTE"), a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, announced today that its operating revenue rose to RMB58.29 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2011, an increase of 26.5 per cent year-on-year.
Net profit attributable to parent company shareholders for the same period was RMB1.07 billion, a year-on-year decline of 21.5 per cent. The decrease is mainly attributable to increased financial expenses. Basic earnings per share for the period were RMB0.31.
Revenue from terminal sales increased 53.4 per cent year-on-year, driven mainly by growth in sales of 3G and CDMA terminals, and GSM handsets and data cards. Revenue attributed to telecommunications software systems, services and other products saw year-on-year growth of 28 per cent as a result of an increase in fixed terminals and services sales. The company also reported year-on-year growth of 15 per cent in carrier network revenue. This increase is attributed to increased sales of ZTE's wireline products, optical communications systems, domestic sales of GSM/UMTS system equipment and international sales of its CDMA system equipment.
As TD-LTE becomes more popular around the world, ZTE continued to strengthen its position as an industry leader in this sector in the first three quarters of 2011. This is evident in the company's initiatives in high-end markets, including new partnerships with Hutchison (Sweden), Softbank (Japan) and operators in India and Saudi Arabia. ZTE also has further developed its partnerships with multinational operators such as France Telecom and MTN Group in the GSM/UMTS arena.
ZTE secured a record-high market share of 12.5 per cent for the period in the PTN field, maintaining its position as the global leader in optical product manufacturing.
ZTE also obtained a 16.3 per cent share of the high-end data product market among China's telecommunications operators, moving into the No. 3 spot domestically. This is attributed to an increase in sales of the company's high-end data products such as the M6000/T8000.
In the first three quarters of 2011, ZTE's terminal product sales continued to grow, and it is now ranked as the No. 5 handset manufacturer in the world. Its flagship products such as the Blade, Skate and other smartphones have enhanced the company brand. To date, more than 5 million ZTE Blade phones have been sold worldwide. Based on the Blade's success, ZTE launched the Skate, a next-generation 4.3-inch, large-screen smartphone in September. The Skate is available in China, Hong Kong and selected European countries.
Looking ahead to the final three months of 2011, ZTE will be confronted with macroeconomic policy changes in China and a high degree of uncertainty in international economies. The company will focus on projects that aim to expand or upgrade wireless networks that are in line with the Chinese government's broadband strategy. It also will seek opportunities in the ICT industry and related smart terminals market.
Further, the company will strive to completely understand customer requirements and will seek to maintain a positive balance between scale and profit with the fundamental aim of sustaining stable growth.

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) posted a surprise profit in Q3 of 2011

Nokia's telecom gear venture Nokia Siemens Networks posted a surprise small third-quarter profit on Thursday and repeated it still hoped for a positive operating margin for the full year.
Nokia Siemens Networks, a 50-50 venture of Nokia and Siemens, has struggled for profitability since it was formed in 2007 amid tight operator spending and fierce competition from rivals Huawei and Ericsson.
In the third quarter, the venture made an underlying (nonIFRS) operating profit of 6.0 million euros (5.2 million pounds) compared with a forecast for a 31.5 million loss in a Reuters poll.
Nokia Siemens said it expected fourth-quarter sales to be between 3.7 and 4.0 billion euros and its underlying operating profit margin would be between 1 percent and 4 percent.
On Sept 29 Nokia and Siemens said they would both put in additional 500 million euros into the venture to strengthen its financial position.
