TRA introduced Carrier pre-selection (CPS) facility for fixed line customers in UAE

Users are now have the opportunity to choose their service provider regardless of the main access line provider.

The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said it has achieved a major landmark with the commercial launch of its carrier pre-selection (CPS) for fixed-voice calls by licensees, du and Etisalat.

A customer, e.g., is physically connected to Etisalat’s network will be able to have access to services from du’s network and vice versa.

CPS is the more advanced mechanism of Carrier Selection (CS) as it allows customers to select their preferred service provider to route their fixed-voice calls without dialing additional codes on the telephone.

CPS uses network access technology which allows traffic originating from the customer’s line to be routed to the network of the chosen service provider as the 'selection' of the preferred provider is automatically carried out by the exchanges in the public network of the main access line provider.

In the early part of the third quarter of 2011, both operators, du & Etisalat, had announced the soft launch of the service. The soft launch was designed to assess all aspects of the service including the customer facing systems, the inter-operator systems, the order and provision process etc.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in Argentina set to start

Mobile number portability (MNP) service is expected to be offered this month which enables users to switch their operators while retaining their mobile number. This would improve not only quality of service but also better customer service as well as price competition.

Communications software and services provider, Telcordia, has been selected to manage mobile number portability (MNP) in Argentina. The award was announced by the Ministerio de Planificacion Federal, Secretaria de Communicationes (SeCom) on behalf of the Comite de Portabilidad Numerica, a consortium of all mobile operators in Argentina.

 

Telcordia will provide training and managed services over the five-year term. Telcordia manages number portability for more than one billion users worldwide. The Telcordia number portability solution has been selected for deployments in countries around the world, including: the US, Canada, Mexico, Chile, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Lithuania, Greece, UAE, South Africa, and Nigeria.

The Argentine mobile market has more than 53 million costumers at the end of 2Q of 2011, representing a penetration of around 130%. The market is divided between four players: three main players, i.e, Telecom Argentina (Personal), América Móvil (Claro), and Movistar (it's a result of Telefónica’s merger of Unifón and Movicom (first Argentine operator)) having with similar shares and one relatively small operator (Nextel) providing only trunking services.

Etisalat to windup its operation from India and Indonsia

UAE telecom operator Etisalat plans to sell its entire stake (around 13.29 %) in Indonesia's No.3 phone firm PT XL Axiata.

 

Etisalat has hired JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley to handle the sale, which may launch via an equity placement, the sources said.Etisalat, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and XL Axiata declined to comment.

Etisalat bought its XL Axiata stake in 2007 for $440 million as part of its expansion strategy outside UAE.

Its already decided to windup another iperation from India. This moves come after Indian Supreme court cancelled 122 2G licences acquired in 2008 licence auction.
 


Etisalat also mentioned that it will stop providing mobile services in India after March' 2012.

Zain Saudi appointed new CEO

 

Saudi Telecom operator, Zain appointed Fraser Curley as chief executive. He is the third CEO in six months.

Curley's appointment came after Zain Saudi, an affiliate of Kuwaiti group Zain, accepted the resignation of Khalid al-Omar, who will going to retire.

Omar took over as head of Zain Saudi in October 2011 after the departure of Saad al-Barrak. He was formerly chief executive of Zain's operations in Kuwait whereas Barrak was also a former Zain group CEO.

The firm's latest loss -- 461 million riyals ($122.92 million) in the 4Q 2011 -- brings its accumulated losses to 9.7 billion riyals, or 70 about percent of its capital.

According to Zain's 2010 annual report, the most recent available, Zain Saudi's mobile market share falling to 16 percent in 2010 from 18 percent in 2009.

Siemens objected on NSN for closure of office in Germany

Siemens AG (SI) Chief Financial Officer Joe Kaeser objected over Nokia Siemens Network's planned job cuts in Germany and urges to find some alternative.
In a weekend interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung, he said Siemens won't accept "that NSN simply disappears from Munich."
NSN planned to cut 17,000 jobs globally, in which around 3,000 of that would be in Germany.

Ericsson is reducing its staff from North America

Ericsson is cutting its workforce in North America from its total workforce of more than 14,000 people.

Ericsson profit dropped of more than 50% in 4Q profits due to slowdown in operator spending during the second half of last year.

The layoffs will be less than 10 percent of its total employees. The Kansas City Star said Ericsson would cut 130 jobs in the Kansas City area, Sprint's home state, but Ericsson said that the layoffs would not affect Ericsson's ability to operate Sprint's network.
